Methodology & data sources

Trek Ready helps UK travellers prepare for trips abroad - visas, passport rules, vaccines, driving permits and more. This page explains where every piece of data comes from, how often it's refreshed, and the limits of what we publish.

Why we publish this

Travel-health information is regulated content - the wrong dose schedule for a yellow fever vaccine, or an out-of-date visa rule, can have real consequences. We're a small independent team, not a clinic or government body, and we don't generate any of this guidance ourselves. Everything you see on a country page is sourced from a named UK authority and timestamped so you can judge how fresh it is.

If you spot something wrong, please email us - we'd rather be told.

Where our data comes from

Visa, passport and entry rules

Source: gov.uk Foreign Travel Advice (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office)

We fetch the FCDO's "Entry requirements" page for each country, parse out the structured fields where possible (passport validity months, visa-required yes/no, pre-arrival authorisation type), and fall back to the raw FCDO HTML where parsing isn't safe. The original gov.uk source URL is linked on every country page.

Vaccine recommendations and lead times

Source: NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro (UK Health Security Agency)

NaTHNaC is the UK's official travel-health authority for healthcare professionals. We extract their per-country vaccine recommendations and group them into "Required", "Recommended" and "Consider" tiers based on NaTHNaC's own classification. Lead times are derived from each vaccine's standard course duration. We cross-reference against NHS Fit for Travel (NHS Scotland) and the US CDC Traveller's Health for sanity-checking.

International Driving Permits

Source: gov.uk - International Driving Permits

Each country's required IDP convention (1926, 1949 Geneva, or 1968 Vienna) is taken from the UK government's published list. UK IDPs are issued in person by PayPoint (since 2024 - the Post Office no longer issues them).

Currency, plug types and customs limits

Sources: REST Countries, Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0), gov.uk (OGL v3.0)

Currency codes and symbols come from REST Countries (originally World Bank). Plug-type illustrations are from Wikimedia Commons under CC BY-SA 4.0. Cash-declaration limits are extracted from the FCDO's foreign-travel-advice pages and reproduced under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

How often we refresh

Each data source is fetched on its own cadence. The "Last updated" date on every country page reflects the most recent refresh of any data shown there.

  • Visa & entry rules: refreshed approximately weekly during normal operation. The FCDO updates these continuously.
  • Vaccines: refreshed approximately fortnightly. NaTHNaC's recommendations are stable but they publish outbreak-driven updates that we want to pick up promptly.
  • IDP requirements: refreshed when the UK government's published list changes - typically once or twice a year.
  • Currency, plugs, cash limits: refreshed on demand when source data changes.

Limits and what we don't claim

  • Trek Ready is not medical advice. We surface NaTHNaC and NHS guidance but cannot account for your individual medical history, pregnancy, immunocompromise, or destination-specific risk profile. Always confirm vaccines with a UK-registered GP, pharmacist, or travel-health clinic before booking.
  • Visa and entry rules change without notice. Our fetch cadence is best-effort, not real-time. Always cross-check the FCDO source link on the country page (and the destination country's embassy or consulate) before you travel.
  • UK passport-holder focus. Visa rules differ by passport. Our pages assume a UK passport holder; if you hold a different passport or dual nationality, our advice may not apply.
  • No paid placements in editorial. Country page rankings, vaccine listings, and entry-requirement summaries are not influenced by advertisers. Trek Ready does carry affiliate links to gear, eSIMs, and insurance providers (clearly marked), but these never affect the underlying data we publish.
  • No medical reviewer (yet). Country pages are currently not reviewed by a named clinician before publication. We're working on adding a UK travel-health reviewer; until then, treat our pages as a structured signpost to authoritative sources, not as professional medical advice.

Editorial process

Country page data is automated end-to-end: scheduled scripts fetch each source, parse the relevant fields, and write a static page per country. Where parsing is ambiguous (e.g. visa rules with multiple categories), we publish the source's raw HTML rather than risk a wrong summary.

Editorial copy elsewhere on the site - feature explanations, trip-planning guidance, the FAQ - is written by Trek Ready's founder and updated as the product evolves. We don't use AI-generated content for medical or regulatory information.

Reporting an error

If a country page shows out-of-date or incorrect information, please email hello@trekready.app with the country, the section, and the source you believe is correct. We'll investigate and update the underlying data within 48 hours where we can.
