Central America overland: vaccines, visas & the UK traveller's prep guide

Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica and Panama

The Gringo Trail's quieter, beachier cousin. Central America packs five countries, two oceans and most of Mesoamerica's pre-Columbian history into a region you can cross overland in three weeks if you're moving fast, or three months if you're not. Most British travellers fly into Mexico City or CancΓΊn, work south through the YucatΓ‘n's cenotes and Maya ruins, dip into Guatemala for Antigua and Lake AtitlΓ‘n, weave through Belize for the cayes, then push down to Costa Rica's national parks and Panama's canal.

The good news: none of these five countries require a visa for British passport-holders for stays under 90 days, and the vaccine profile is light compared to South America or East Africa. The catch: dengue is a year-round nuisance across the region, mosquito-borne illness load shifts seasonally, and Belize, Costa Rica and Panama don't list a UK IDP convention - if you plan to drive in those, ask the rental company exactly what they need.

Current health watch

Dengue: Year-round transmission across all five countries with cases peaking in the wet season (May to November). Cases have surged across Central America since 2024 - cover up at dawn and dusk, use a 50% DEET repellent, and stay in accommodation with screens or air-con where you can. There is no UK-licensed dengue vaccine for travellers without prior infection.

Yellow fever: Not endemic in any of these five countries, and not required for entry from the UK. However, a yellow fever certificate is required for entry to Costa Rica or Panama if you've recently been in a yellow-fever-risk country (most of South America, sub-Saharan Africa). Plan your trip order accordingly - or get the jab as a precaution if you might tack a side-trip on later.

When to go

Central America's seasons divide neatly into dry and wet, but they don't mean what you'd expect. December to April is the dry season - clear skies, packed tourist trails, peak prices, hurricane risk gone. This is when most British travellers come, especially around Christmas. May to November is the wet (or 'green') season - daily afternoon downpours of an hour or two rather than constant rain, jungles at their lushest, far fewer crowds, and lower prices. The Caribbean coast (Belize, eastern Costa Rica, Panama's San Blas) gets hammered by hurricanes from August to October; the Pacific stays milder. February-March is genuinely the sweet spot if you can swing it.

Central America overland: frequently asked questions

Do I need different vaccines for each country on this route?

Mostly no. Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica and Panama share a similar vaccine profile under UK NaTHNaC guidance, so a single travel-clinic appointment can cover the whole trip. commonly recommended jabs include Hepatitis A, Tetanus / Diphtheria, Typhoid. The combined list above shows exactly which countries each vaccine is needed for.

How far in advance should I start preparing?

Aim to book your travel-clinic appointment at least 8 weeks before you fly. For this route specifically, the longest lead times come from Rabies (Pre-exposure) (28 days), so plan to start those courses around 12 weeks out. Visa applications and an International Driving Permit are quicker - allow 1-2 weeks for an eVisa and same-day for an IDP from PayPoint. The prep timeline above shows what to do when.

Can I do this trip on one visa?

No - each country issues its own visa or pre-arrival authorisation. Mexico: ESTA (no visa); Guatemala: no visa needed; Belize: no visa needed; Costa Rica: no visa needed; Panama: no visa needed.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for this trip?

Only if you plan to drive yourself - hire cars and motorbikes alike. UK photocard licences are not legally sufficient on their own in any of these countries. This route crosses multiple IDP conventions - check each country's full guide and pick the right permit type from PayPoint (Β£5.50 per IDP, same-day). Note: most travel insurance won't cover a road accident if you don't hold the right licence and IDP for the country you're in.

Where can I get UK travel vaccines for this trip?

NHS GPs provide some travel jabs for free under the NHS schedule (typically: tetanus/diphtheria/polio booster, hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera). For this route, paid jabs you may need include Rabies (Pre-exposure) - charged privately even at NHS clinics, or available at private travel clinics like Boots, Superdrug, MASTA and local pharmacies. Boots and Superdrug publish their travel-vaccine prices online and can usually book you in within 1-2 weeks. Always cross-check the UK NaTHNaC list above against your destinations.
